The Woodworking Designs of Stephen Hynson

The Beauty of Hawaiian Koawood

"KOAWOOD ROCKING CHAIR"

Studio Built and Handcrafted
From Rare Hawaiian Koawood
$2,800

Using rare, deep-grained Hawaiian curly Koa and cherry wood, Maui master furniture artisan Stephen Hynson has created a rocking chair right out of the pages of Dwell Magazine.

The spare modern lines are reminiscent of Danish handcrafted furniture of days gone by. No fluff, just a beautifully made chair designed for comfort and beauty. It's a "head-turner".

With its exposed joinery and clean lines enhanced by the beauty of Hawaiian koa, this rocker is a wonderful addition to any room. But at the end of the day it is the comfort that matters. It is an easy, safe and effortless rock. The curved back fully supports the weight of the body, lightening the load as the dowels gently massage your back. Take a seat . . . see for yourself how well-supported your lumbars are by the cherry-wood back and seat, how the chair arms fit so perfectly under YOUR arms. It is called "Ergonomics" by some and just plain comfortable by others.

"Jacques-Emile Comes To Hawaii"

Art Deco-style Buffet
From Rare Hawaiian "Curly-Grain" Koawood
size is 5' x 2' x 3'
$18,295.00

The buffet is the first of a series of pieces inspired by the French Art Deco designer, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann. Select vertical grain Hawaiian koa encases and surrounds the form of the piece inside and out. The taper and gentle curve of the legs with their holly toes lifts the cabinet above the floor in the subtle dance of positive and negative space. As the eye is draw in to the center of the piece with the recessed dovetail drawers and drop pulls with mother of pearl escutcheon plates, the reverse start-burst pattern of the top veneer draws the eye back out to discover a cross hatch of holly accented with mother of pearl wrapped around the sides of the cabinet. Surprises are found behind doors.

"Oriental-style Side Table"
From Rare Hawaiian Vertical Grain Koawood and Wenge
size is 2' x 2' x 2'
$3,000

The table is a contemporary update of a traditional Oriental table. The traditional and stylized horse leg grounds the table to the floor. This is counterposed by the wenge spacer with its gentle cove lifting the top off the legs. The matching and mirrored triangular veneer pattern cascades over the edge, is briefly interrupted by the wenge spacer. The vertical grain Hawaiian koa is finally contained by the wenge bead wrapping around the bottom of the table rails. The table provides a beautiful setting for an objet d'art or an evening quaff as one is drawn into a Maui sunset, remembered or newly encountered.

Self taught, Stephen first set up shop in Hawaii, and was a founding member of the Maui Crafts Guild. He moved to Boston a few years later, participating there in the beginning of the studio furniture revival of the 1980's. He later relocated to Portland, Oregon. During this time he continued to show his work in local Maui galleries.

Stephen returned to Hawaii in 2005 and broke ground on a building in Haiku. With timbers harvested from Polipoli Springs State Park he has constructed a traditional timber frame workshop. Work continues on the embellishment of this structure and tending to the land as Stephen reconnects with his Hawaiian roots.

"Waiting On The Mayor"
From Locally Harvested Hawaiian Mango Wood
size is 60" x 20"' x 20"
$4,700

The title of this piece is "Waiting on The Mayor". It was designed for the newly renovated Maui mayoral office. The mango wood was harvested locally from the Twin Falls area on Maui. A solid place to sit and perhaps wait, the lightness of the tapered legs and double horizontal reveal sets the intention to "get up and do good work".
