Susie Burnside Monroe

Susie Monroe lives and paints in Kula, Maui, inspired by her children and the beautiful up-country area on the Northwestern slopes of Haleakala.

First arriving in Hawaii in 1969, Susie Burnside Monroe was born in New South Wales, Australia. Susie later returned to the U.S. mainland to attend collage, where she eventually studied both art and jewelry design.

After her formal art studies, she apprenticed herself to the noted artisan and designer Linda Watson Abbott, and finally became a full-fledged goldsmith. She maintained her own custom design jewelry business, and was commissioned by other jewelers (including Tiffany's) in San Francisco, Laguna Beach and Carmel, California to design and create special settings. She is a recipient of a gemologist certificate from the Gemological Institute of America.

Susie Monroe moved back to the islands in 1978, settling on Kauai. She married and began her family of three children. It was during this period that she turned from the concentration-demanding art of jewelry design to fulltime painting. Mrs. Monroe has studied with such highly acclaimed American artists as Joe Garcia, Charles Faust, Eileen Monihan Whitaker and Hawaii's own master Tri Hue teacher Richard Nelson.

Her work is found in numerous corporate and private collections, including the prestigious private collection of Baron Hans Thyssen of Madrid, Spain.
